1. Crime Prevention
bullet Member of the Selkirk Crime Prevention Task Force, created to analyze the needs of our community and prepare and action plan.
bullet Proposed and instituted a citizen controlled Crime Prevention Council, which focuses and targets crime prevention activities in Selkirk to improve their effectiveness.
bullet Proposed & successfully lobbied for a Home Audit Program that helps citizens crime proof their homes.
bullet Supported the increase of law enforcement complement in Selkirk.
bullet Championed the successful increase in by-law enforcement and community patrolling.

 

2. Fiscally Prudent and Responsible Government
bullet Demanded strict fiscal reporting and accountable spending of tax dollars.
bullet Forced the tendering of the City’s banking contract saving taxpayers $20,000 a year in increased revenue interest and decreased service fees.
bullet Promotion of Selkirk's recycling program as a cost cutting measure. When Selkirk reaches it's goal of 80% of waste diversion, over $200,000 of your tax dollars will be saved annually!
bullet As chair of Selkirk's Audit committee, Duane has proposed strict new internal controls and a strengthened mandate for the audit committee.

 

3. Open and Accessible local governance
bullet Established a dedicated phone line with a secure voice mailbox for members of the community to contact me directly.
bullet Created this web site as a means by which people can have access to useful community information, where people can see what actions I am taking as their elected representative, and to facilitate discussion on important issues.
bullet Advertised contact information to ensure availability to citizens.
bullet Met with citizens and organizations upon request.
bullet Called for public involvement in setting priorities for city council.

 

4. Community Economic Development
bullet Involved in the dramatic increase of commercial and residential development in Selkirk.
bullet Worked closely with the Selkirk and District Chamber of Commerce as the City of Selkirk Council Representative and served on the Chamber's board of directors.
bullet Worked with the Selkirk and District Chamber of Commerce to establish and promote the "Shop Locally" gift certificate program.
bullet Worked to ensure new development in the city is done in a sustainable manner.
bullet Proposed the establishment of a transit system which will help to attract new residential, industrial, and commercial development.
bullet Worked with community organizations to bring affordable housing solutions to our community.
bullet Championed the development of a marketing campaign to attract more movie production in Selkirk.

 

5. Expansion of recycling programs and development of other "green" policies.
bullet Participated in the successful expansion of Selkirk’s nationally recognized recycling program.
bullet Worked with council and administration to implement Selkirk's centralized yard waste composting program.
bullet Proposed installation of recyclable materials collection receptacles along Main St, Manitoba Ave, and the Water Front Development.
bullet Chaired the Selkirk Transit Taskforce. If the recommendations are implemented greenhouse gas emissions will be reduce.
bullet Current chairs Selkirk Councils standing Transit standing committee which is developing the business plan for Selkirk's first transit system.
bullet Proposed a water conservation program to better manage our delicate ground water resource and save citizens money on their water bills.
bullet Working with council and administration towards the goal of storm sewer separation, thus eliminating the potential for the release of Selkirk's raw sewage in to the Red River during high precipitation events.
bullet Endorsed the Responsible Electronics Recycling Program which would divert dangerous electronics waste from our landfills and create jobs in our community.
bullet Championed Selkirk's joining of the East Interlake Conservation District. Duane now site as Selkirk Council representative to this organization.
